Justine's Post Shoe Drop Reflection: Tired people change the world.

The past five weeks have been a roller coaster for me and Soule. Doing this reflection now is good as it allows me to take some time to slow down and analyze everything that have been happening.

3 years ago Soule was only an idea, today everything is moving so fast, and so many things are happening at the same time. I've come to realize that thinking of the idea only took a few seconds through inspiration, but making it happen takes years of hard work and perspiration. It is a whole different story. I did not expect it to be this hard and tiring.

In January this year we launched our Soule flip flops after spending a week in Malaysia trying to look for a suitable supplier. It was a milestone for us, finally we had a product. However, it took us 9 months, to sell 250 pairs of them. Standing for hours on the booth, carrying the stocks from places to places, explaining our cause over and over again, giving talks from schools to schools, I find myself running everywhere, and hardly had time to catch a breath.

Not until September 26, our first ever shoe drop in Lincang, China. The day we've been waiting for after 3 grueling years. Giving that 309 pairs of shoes is something I will remember for the rest of my life. It's not just about the shoes or me, it's about the children and them having access to education.

The pure joy on their faces just by receiving such a simple pair of school shoes was moving. And the words of gratitude that came out of their mouths nearly brought me to tears so many times. It was such a great experience, but at the same time heart wrenching. Heart wrenching because there are so many more children who we have yet to help, and so many more needs that have yet to be met there. This experience made me leave China, understanding that there is more work to be done. But I'm thankful I went to China because meeting the children also fuelled me with passion and drive to move this forward.

Yes, it is going to be even more tiring, but tired people change the world.

Day One: Soule-dier Hui Peng Reporting!

Today has been a long but great day for the 3 of us! I met Jying and Justine in the morning and we went for a great breakfast before we settled off for Kunming early in the morning. It has been a long awaited day for the Soule team as they had been planning 3 years for this very day to give shoes to the little kids over at a school in Lincang, so that they won’t have to walk barefooted to school anymore. I feel really priviledged to be able to join their team in this trip as I get to touch the lives of these little kids as well! Believe this will definitely be a life-changing experience for

me. (:

Upon arriving at Kunming, we spent long hours waiting and travelling and we finally reached Lincang in the late afternoon! I felt really excited as I know that this is the very place that we are going to change the lives of the little kids who are studying at the elementary school and they won’t have to travel barefooted anymore. Lincang was a really beautiful place as it is surrounded by trees and mountains. We were hosted by the general secretary of the education system in Lincang and he actually brought us to a little house for dinner.

Along the way, I noticed many people walking by the road and Justine actually shared to me that many of the kids actually need to walk one hour everyday to get to school. Which means if they have school early in the morning, they’ll need to wake up reallyy early just to travel to school. Travelling time is one thing. But imagine walking barefooted? Imagine the amount of blisters and cuts that the little kids have. Thankful that many people have actually made the decision to support this business so that another pair of shoes can be donated to help these little kids!(:

So carrying on, over at the little house, a few villagers actually whipped up a really sumptuos meal for us! The meal consisted of many different kinds of vegetables that they have planted themselves and most of the dishes were really spicy. Many of the dishes were also part of their local delicacy and we got a chance to try fried bees, cow’s knuckles and many more..overall, the meal was not bad! And then after which, we moved on to our place of accomodation to put our bags and along the way, we got a chance to talk to one of the villagers as he was the one driving us to our place of accomodation. He shared to us about how much he wanted to make a trip to Singapore since young but wasn’t able to do so cos of his circumstances and financial ability. He also expressed that many of the villagers felt really grateful upon hearing that Soule will be donating shoes to the kids over at the elementary school as many of them can’t afford to even get a pair of shoes. That was how much the kids there really needed the shoes. Really glad of the work that Soule is doing! (:

N all in all, this has definitely been an adventurous day for me and I believe for the rest of the members too. Looking forward to tomorrow cos we’ll be visiting many different schools to help the little kids! Time for me to rest! N hope u guys enjoyed reading this post! Soule Football Tournament 2010 - 1st May 2010
Soule Football Tournament 2010 was a great success! Helpers from BZSE and SEC (Student Entrepreneurs' Club), as well as reporters from npTribune (Ngee Ann Polytechnic's official newspaper) came to help out as well :)

48 boys were fighting it all out and giving their all for the glory of being crowned as the Champion of the tournament :)

The competition was blessed with a sunny hot day and no signs of rain at all. The exciting moments were captured and 'live' commentary by the students themselves.

Soule is out on the Straits Times, Home Causes section! Hooray! With the success of our first batch of flip flops, selling over 200 pairs in less than a month, Soule is going to launch a series of new products in the month of June!

Soule is going to launch our very own line of T-Shirts, along with our new label for the young ones, Baby Soule!

Visit to JB Orphanage

Soule went to an Orphange, Association of Children Welfare Orphanage Johor (PKAYJ) in Johor Bahru on April 11th 2010.

Aim: to bless the children there with brand-new Toys :)

The Panda Soft Toy (as seen in the above picture) were the "bestsellers" among the children. Even a 13 year old boy requested for a panda soft toy!

Hi allllllll! Soule has been kept on its toes, since end Feb and.........we kick started our March with the inaugural Young Social Entrepreneurs' Programme 2010 organised by the Singapore International Foundation (SIF)! (3 March - 7 March 2010)

Exciting Update #01:

Soule is proud to be awarded First Prize in the SIF Young Social Entrepreneur's Competition 2010!

On behalf of Soule, we would like to thank the organisers from SIF who hosted this programme and provided Soule with the valuable and awesome experience!

The programme is a 5 day boot-camp style programme; there were 6 final teams who were chosen from 20 plus teams which submitted their business proposals.

And Soule is so proud to be part of the 6 final teams! We learnt so much about taking the business up to the next level. We also learnt from the different workshop speakers as well as youths of Asia. There was so much energy, creativity and ideas bouncing off each other! Wow :)

Just want you to know that we really appreciate the support and interest garnered in the recent months.

There hasn't been updates for awhile now and you've our apologies for that!

We are as excited as all of you and eager to make our next big step.

If you've been following the world, its pretty much all doom and gloom... Especially in the retail sector.

So this little big dream of ours has been delayed, sadly...

BUT.

Delay is not Denial!

The recession has all the more inspired us to start our business in these trying times.

Why would someone start a business that GIVES, amidst a global recession where everyone is trying to TAKE & KEEP for themselves?

Just to update you, we clinched second place in the MISE competition!

And before you celebrate with us, know that this is only the beginning.

Here's a few updates:
a)
The first batch had a few hiccups, with delays from the factory in China.
(what were we thinking?Scheduling the manufacturing of the shoes on the month of the BeiJing Olympics!)
But don't fret! The olympics have ended TODAY, and the selfless Machine is no doubt churning out the shoes that will change lives soon!

There are a few new exciting developments going on under wraps. But watch out for a cooler newer Soule!
We can't wait to share these new ideas with you!

Hi people,

Just want to let you guys know you can still continue pre-ordering. We will continue taking pre-orders as we hope to hit our target of selling 200 pairs of shoes.

Anyway, we just want to let you guys know there aren't any half sizes (e.g. US Size 9.5), but ony whole numbers. So we will round up all half sizes, for example US size 9.5 to US size 10. Hence, if you'd like to make any changes do email us at- selfless-shoe@hotmail.com

Just want to let you know the pre-order for SOuLE will end this coming Friday (6 June). So if you haven't placed your orders, please do so now! We need as much support as we can get! We will send the sizes of the pre-orders to the supplier on that day itself. And it will take a month to manufacture it.

We will distribute the shoes to you, on the official launch of Project Selfless Shoe (Date and venue to be confirmed). We will collect the cash on that day itself.

License to sell items for fund-raising / violated the law?

Hey guys, some of you may have thought that it is illegal to solicit sales or to ask for fund-raising for welfare purposes without a license.

However,

"Q8: Do we need to apply for a license if we're selling items for fund-raising?
There will be a blanket fund-raising license for all community projects under the YFC programme during the execution period from 1 June to 21 Sept 2008. However, please note that this will only cover fund-raising."

(a) a private collection that is confined to friends or relatives; or making an appeal through the telephone or the media such as the internet and newspapers; or sending out appeal letters by post.
(b) a collection that is carried out by a full or associate member of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) or the Community Chest. However, a written approval from the Chief Executive Officer of the NCSS has to be obtained before the collection (website address at http://ncss.org.sg). Prototype Pictures

Hey Guys,

Here is the prototype photo we took from the shoe supplier. However this prototype has yet to have our exact label.

The actual SOuLE would have the label (SOuLE) on the tongue, and hopefully the SOLE-DIER logo on the in-sole/cushion as well.

Please order guys! We need all the pre-order sizes by next week, as it would take a month to manufacture and deliver the shoes to us.

The reason why we are collecting pre-order is to minimise wastage. So please order with confidence. We need your support!

Many of you requested for a logo. So we came up with this, Sole-dier logo (above). Every customer that buy a pair of SOuLE is a Sole-dier. Battling for this SOULE purpose:

The last thing we want people to do, is to buy a pair of SOuLE out of sympathy, and keep it at home. Yes, we want compassionate people to work with us, but we want them to be proud of the shoes as well. Put it on. Talk about it. Promote it.

3 Things You Need To Know

Hi again everyone,

Thanks for all the encouragements, and interest.

Right now, we just need to let you know 3 things before you order your SOuLE:

1. Design

A few people have asked us this question. "Is the selfless shoes just going to be plain white? Or is there going to be designs on it?"

Answer: For the first 200 pairs of SOuLE, it will be plain white but do note that we have 3 design workshops (as seen in the collection sector) so that you can customise your own SOuLE. Customisation will be done with canvas paint and brushes, which we will provide on the days of the workshops.

You can take home your shoe in 3 kinds of design.
First- Plain White (If you are a student in Primary/Secondary School)
Second- In House Designers (We will have our own set of designs and you can pick them)
Third- DIY (Do It Yourself! Make it your own unique design and no one else will have the exact same pair)

2. Payment

We aren't Hi-tech yet and have no NETS machine. Hence, the only method is cash and carry. To make you guys feel more secure. We will collect the money only when we have the goods, which would also be further elaborated in the collection method.

3. Collection

The collection will all happen in the design workshops. Which we will conduct in our school, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. There and then, it will be the official launch of Project Selfless Shoes. The exact venue and date will be confirmed with you guys again.

Pre-Ordering starts NOW!!

Hey all!

Good NEWS!! Our project has been accepted by Citibank-YMCA YFC! So we can start implementing our project right away!

We have already contacted our shoe supplier and have already worked out the deal. All we need to do now is collect the pre-orders! So please order now people! We are targetting to sell and give away 200 pairs of selfless shoes!

As you can see on the right the pre-order function is already installed. All you need to do is just follow the steps, fill in the blank and order! A pair of Selfless shoes cost SGD$29.90 (remember the buy one give one free policy!) So you are actually buying 2 shoes with that amount actually! We don't make any profits. All proceeds goes to buying more shoes to sell and give away, hence sustaining this business.

We need all the orders and sizes by this week! As it would take a month to manufacture SOuLE and ship it over to Singapore. The photo (below) is sent to me by the supplier of how our shoe would roughly look like.

This is the first post of this amazing project that we are about to do.

Who are we?
We are students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

What on is the social issue we are concern about?
As you can see from the project title- Selfless Shoe. The issue we are trying to fight is the lack of shoes around the world. In such a modern world we live in today, such as Singapore, many people tend to take a basic neccessity such as a pair of shoe for granted. However, in many countries such as Cambodia, India, China, Africa, etc. People are so poor they literally give up on shoes. They just walk bare-footed. And unlike many 1st world countries, they don't have plain floorings. They walk on deserts, forests, jungles, where they are prone to cuts and poisonous plants. We want to eliminate that vulnerability.

Why do we want to solve that problem?
Your feet is the only part of your whole body that touches the ground almost all the time. No where else in your body do you need to make contact with the earth almost all the time. And the children that live in such conditions suffer the most. They get infections, diseases, and to make things worse their medical services are not as good as ours. And what else can happen?

How can we solve the problem?
By providing them with protection on their feet. As we know "prevention is always better than cure."

Our product:
SOuLe is basically a product that we are marketing. It is a ordinary canvas shoe. But with a extraordinary value laying behind it.

See, for every pair of SOuLe that is sold, we will give anothe pair to a child who needs it more (e.g. Orphans, Needy students). Hence, we are promoting a "Buy One Give One Free" Policy, instead of the usual, "Buy One Get One Free".

And in this way, we can solve that social issue. One sole at a time.
